Hello Reader,
I'm sharing an email I received from Charis Lindrooth. This sums up why I asked her to lead the retreat here at Heartsong Farm next weekend...This opportunity has the ability to make a tremendous impact on your life. Would love to have you join us!
"Of course, we all value our brains, but I want to share a little deeper. Many of you know that I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s almost two years ago. That was a real gut punch, but now that I’m accustomed to the idea, I’ve become more motivated than ever to find answers to natural brain care and share them with anyone who will listen.
The first time I struggled with brain fog was shortly after giving the valedictory speech when I graduated from chiropractic school. I noticed it while driving, and the scariness of it all shook me hard.
It had never occurred to me that my brain might fail me. Like most of us, I took my ‘smarts’ for granted. Suddenly I was having trouble remembering details, trouble focusing, and I felt tired all the time. I had no idea that the stress and pressure I endured at school impacted my brain function.
During this same time, I watched helpless and hopeless as my grandmother struggled with Alzheimer’s disease and finally passed. Not long after, both my aunt and uncle succumbed to dementia.
I had lost so much to this devastating disease. It’s no wonder I grew fearful for my family’s fate, with study after study showing its inheritability. I worried about my aging father and despaired that my brain fog and fatigue were heralds of the inevitable.
They say, “Ignorance is bliss,” but that’s not me. I had to spring into action. There had to be more to this story than simple genetics.
For years now, I have dedicated my studies to the brain and neurological system. The truth is, there are mountains of information about the brain, and I expect to keep learning for the rest of my life. The study of the brain is both daunting and enticing to me.
Sometimes when I make a big breakthrough in my studies, it makes me cry. I feel silly when I say that, but my heart is so deeply connected to this work, and I feel passionate about curating the information for others in a really usable way.
Let’s go back to my family and my epiphany: the "ah ha!" moment that changed my life and maybe my Dad’s life too. When my problem-solver self kicked in, I realized why I had been studying brain function for so long. It was time to merge my love of science with my passion for plant medicine.
Now I know from personal experience and thorough study of scientific research that the brain thrives on plant nutrients, and building a better brain as we age is truly possible.
My dad’s brain wasn’t perfect after enduring two bouts of septicemia that attacked his brain and body. When severe episodes of anxiety and disorientation plagued him, I stepped in, tools in hand. His recovery was astounding, and we learned what worked for him. We can never know what might have happened without my intervention, but he lived at home with my Mom until the last two weeks of his life, full of love and humor. What could be more rewarding?
There’s a lot more to this story, but I want to bring home one point:
Tending to our brain health is a lifelong project, and like exercise, everyone needs brain care. The world of nature invites us to participate!
